One Bicycle per Person: Putting the BoP on bikes!

Introduction to One Bicyle per Person

Today, there are more than one billion bicycles in use globally. And since 2001, more than 100 million bicycles have been manufactured annually. That's double the production of 25 years ago, growing more than twice as fast as global population. But while perhaps half these bicycles are in mainland China, where they have been key to rapid development, most of the rest are in developed nations. One Bicycle per Person (1BpP) addresses the tremendous unmet need for affordable bicycles at the base of the economic pyramid (BoP).

All of us here at Acumen Fund Community share the same dream of ending extreme poverty.  Affordable personal transportation adds value to every social enterprise's value chain, and each of us can help right now to meet this urgent need by adding our acumen to the 1BpP value web. Together, we will do well by doing even better.

1BpP is an activity/group within Acumen Fund Community, and is not sponsored by Acumen Fund.

You are invited to help if you can.  Join us and add your ideas and links to resources.

About the 1BpP logo: Your Free BoPcycle Shtick.

A shtick is a characteristic attribute, talent, or trait that is helpful in securing recognition or attention. The 1BpP logo used for this group is designed as a good way to convey this idea to the world, but a better way is to include variations designed for particular communities because this is not a one-size-fits-all world. Thus, individuals and communities are encouraged to vary this design to suit their needs and tastes. For example, change the colors, flip the bicycle horizontally, rotate the wheels, highlight your location on the map, even change the language. Just contact the 1BpP group creator to get a copy of the master suitable for Photoshop, and please share your finished creation with the 1BpP group so we can celebrate our diversity by adding it to our Community Flags. And if you think of an even better shtick, please don't be shy!

I've traveled here to learn how to install photovoltaic modules in remote locations through a workshop presented by Solar Energy International, and I'm taking advantage of this travel to learn more about the region while the pieces for People Power Stations slowly come together in India.

Michael Kollins at World Bicycle Relief shared this link with me this morning to Kristof's Column yesterday in the NYT about WBR's recent distribution of bicycles in Zimbabwe. The link to the article, "A Boy and His Bicycle", might expire soon, so here's a short extract:

"In the world of aid, nothing goes quite as planned, and it’s far too early to know whether this program will succeed. World Bicycle Relief tried to get around potential problems by spending months recruiting village elders to oversee the program (it helps that the elders receive bicycles, which they get to keep after two years if they provide solid oversight). Elders will ensure that fathers and older brothers do not confiscate bicycles from girls on the grounds that females are too insignificant to merit something so valuable.

Parents sometimes try to save daughters the risk of walking several hours each way to school by lodging them in town. But the result is sometimes sexual extortion; if a girl wishes to continue her education by staying in cheap lodgings, the price is repeated rape. With bicycles, those girls will now be able to stay at home."

As Kevin says, we at World Bicycle Relief are eager to try to help improve education, healthcare, and economic empowerment using the power of bicycles. We currently have supplied bikes to different organisations and programmes in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, and Sri Lanka. Please don't hesitate to contact us if any of you find yourselves in Kisumu (Kenya), Lusaka (Zambia), or Harare (Zimbabwe) and want to tour our assembly plants and see our products. Regards, Mike Kollins, Regional Director, East Africa
