A group of communicators and tribe builders who want to change the way the world tackles poverty through communications and media

What would it take?

What would it take to change how the world tackles poverty?

An Oscar winning film?
A Nobel Prize?
A bestselling book?
A million person march?
The cover of the NY times?

OR

A grassroots revolution of like-minded people who KNOW we can do better. Who KNOW that a world where MOST people lack access to basic goods and services is a world that doesn't work for ANY of us. A TRIBE. A tribe committed to bringing the talent, knowledge and capital needed to solve problems of poverty in a new way.

I'd like to personally invite you to an event this Friday (2/5) focused on market-based solutions to poverty. Acumen Fund will be represented by Yasmina Zaidman, Director of Communications. This a great chance to connect with others who are passionate about Acumen Fund and the use of market-based approaches to solving poverty - and to build the necessary relationships and momentum to get Acumen Fund chapters started in your area.

Nick Kristof shares a list of 8 organizations to support during the holidays, including Acumen Fund. We are excited to see BRAC, which works with VisionSpring to distribute affordable eyeglasses, and Development in Literacy, which build schools for girls and women in Pakistan, and has built a school within Saiban, one of our housing investments. Every one of these organizations is amazing, and we are proud to be among them. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/24/opinion/24kristof.html?_r=3

here is a link to an interesting story I saw over the weekend about 3 Swedish entrepreneurs who were attempting to use business to engage with (the people of) North Korea.

It caught my eye as there is practically zero exchange of goods, ideas, etc.. with North Korea and by producing a line of jeans there this company instantly changes the game on a number of levels.

Unfortunately it appears the parent company has decided to be risk averse in this instance and does not want the potential controversy seen by having ties with the North Korean regime. Something has got lost in translation when producing jeans (employing impoverished and oppressed people) is deemed 'support' for the government.

Anyway at the minimum it is a good idea...

I totally agree with you Kumbirai, people usually attribute their failure to the past , to the system,,,However paradigm shift must be for both governments and people mind so history wont repeat itself...and the past should not be forgotten, people lives should not be forgotten.People rights should not be just passed by.

Just like Palestinian people they cannot just forget all the past while someone has and STIIL oppressing them, Their land has been stolen , Palestinian people have been brutally killed, their home until this moment are being demolished. And what IRAQ is that past?

Past should be learned from. oppressor must be stopped, people must be stop grieving and move one.people must speak up for their rights.. foreign countries must stop utilizing African ,and Asian land and resourceto gain profit this is present and not past.all this together from a better system for a better nation

I agree with you Ruba, "During the past years they were enormous fund to the third world country however poverty statistics says that poverty had increased, this is really tell us there is something wrong..."

We need people who are willing to work on changing the minds of people. I can give you an example of some people I have dealt with in South Africa, the black people suffered from aparthied in such a way that if you ask them today why they behave in the way they do, they say it is because of aparthied.
well true it is but then what????? It's time people choose to forgive themselves , their governments, their oppressors and move on with what is available now. It won't help us to continue talking about the past in a negative way.

There has to be a paradigm shift.

Unless people are made to understand this they will just continue being our children ( feed me clothe me etc) instead of being adults and say what do we now?

Happy thanksgiving guys over there.
