I am a NASA astronaut who is starting an initiative to use the unique orbital perspective to inspire people to improve life on our planet. I appreciate that I have been given a special privilege. I realize how fortunate I am to be included in that very small group of people who have the opportunity to fly in space. Because of this, I also realize that I have a responsibility to share that experience, as best I can, with everyone who has not been given this opportunity. We have developed a website at www.FRAGILEOASIS.ORG where one of the main goals is to help others share in the wonderful experience of living and working in space and through this experience encourage people and organization to improve life on our Fragile Oasis. At the present, the live site contains blogs by astronauts training for space flight or currently living and working onboard the space station. In a few weeks we are going to launch an on-line community of people and organizations that are committed to improving life on our planet. The Fragile Oasis community will be established to unite crewmembers on our “Spaceship Earth” in the common goal of sharing our humanity and improving our world. The purpose of the community is to inspire, recognize, and help each other in our collective quest to make life better on our planet. Included in the site will be a section that compares systems on a spacecraft (systems to provide clean water, clean air, food ,health etc.) and tie those to projects doing the same on our “Spaceship Earth”. We will tie these together using a mapping program that’s used on the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle. Groups such Acumen and the Blue Sweater Community can highlight their projects on the Fragile Oasis site. The site will provide overviews of your project and link to pictures, videos and to your project website. This March I’m scheduled to launch on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for a 6-month mission on board the International Space Station. During my 6-month mission, when possible I will photograph from space those project sites selected by the Fragile Oasis community. I encourage everyone to follow our progress as we build the site. You can also follow the road to the launchpad and my time in space at: http://twitter.com/Astro_Ron

Hi Ron, and welcome to Acumen Fund's online community! Exciting to hear about your adventurous initiatives! To help get you started on the site, do take a look at some of the different groups available which are built around specific issues and also locations; our Blue Sweater Fan Group may be a good starting point. Oh, and please do add a picture to your profile, as it will add a personal touch that will make it much easier to connect with others on the site. Welcome, and let me know if I can be of help as you move forward!
