Hi Zadok! Nice to meet you. My name is Daryl and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. I'm spending this summer doing research on Social Enterprise development in China, and came across this group as well as some of the papers you had posted. I was wondering if perhaps you might have any other recommendations or suggestions on sources regarding social enterprise in China? Thanks!

Hi Zadok,

I was born in Beijing, though I grew up in the US.  But I'll be there from January until April this year, so I thought I'd join the group and see how I could get involved.  I really don't have any plans in Beijing, I've just graduated from college and I'm taking a few months off, so I wanted to meet some like-minded people.

Hi Zadok,

I just tried to call you but your phone is off. Sorry, I wasn't able to call on Monday. I was very busy making up the time I lost at work due to the flu. Anyway, I was wondering what the rules are precisely. If we arrange the event at Bookworm, we cannot collect donations at the event but can we can direct people to a website overseas to make their donations online? Would that be permitted under local laws?

Thanks

Hi Zadok,

I am actually home sick today. My head is not that clear. I'll call you on Monday to discuss the feasibility of the Bookworm idea. Let's plan it for January.

Yours,
Lindsey

Hi Zadok,

Have you heard of the Bookworm? It's the library/bar/cafe that hosts "Green Drinks" once a month. It attracts a lot of people work in the green sector. My idea is that we get a speaker with some Acumen Fund experience to talk about AF and the Blue Sweater. The Bookworm already has a mailing list and advertises on magazines so we can advertise this event. We could sell copies of the book and raise some money for AF too. What do you think?

Hi Zadok,

I've been to China on several occasions and actually have spent a half a year in Beijing, which holds a dear place in my heart. My first time before then was actually in Gansu with a teaching program, working with local teachers on their English teaching methods and helping them to incorporate technology into the classroom. And I was in China again this past summer, in Shanghai, studying local business there with my current graduate program. As I've gotten interested in social enterprise in general (first with Muhammad Yunus's work, and then Ms. Novogratz's), I also started thinking about how social enterprise can effect positive change in China. I'm familiar with the Wokai microlending organization, and also have been thinking about education in China as well as migrant worker issues. I'm interested in any discussion about such topics or learning about what kind of innovative work is being undertaken in China.

Cheers,
Nabill
